Our work begins with establishing a supportive therapeutic relationship and developing a shared understanding of your goals. If it seems I may be able to help you, we will explore your goals and ways to achieve them.  If I or you don’t think I can help, we’ll talk it through and I can refer you to someone with the right expertise, or who may be a better fit for your needs.

From there, we identify practical and achievable steps that align with what matters to you. Throughout therapy, we reflect on your progress and adapt our approach to ensure the work remains relevant and useful. Sessions may include understanding patterns that keep you stuck, developing new skills to meet challenges, and strengthening changes so they can be carried into daily life in a sustainable way.

When we understand what works for you, we can then start to consolidate your gains. Identifying blockers and challenges, or practicing new helpful skills and habits, will all help you to make meaningful and lasting changes. When we wrap things up, we can discuss how to maintain your gains in everyday life.

People starting therapy wonder what to expect, how long it will last, about costs, or how to prepare for and make the most of sessions. Some of these questions are answered below.

They may wonder if they can ask about the therapist’s experience, approach, and how the therapy will help.  They may have privacy concerns, or other fears about the process, such as what will happen if they are not making progress? I am more than happy to answer any and all such questions, before or during our first session. There are no silly questions!

FAQS

“Do I have to have a mental health concern to seek counselling?”

No, you do not. Counselling is a valuable support for those who are living with mental health concerns, and also a resource to improve your quality of life, or simply explore your next bold move with someone trained to help you to decide what you need and want to feel more fulfilled

“What issues do you treat?”

I have worked with people on managing or exiting high conflict relationships, addictions and other compulsive behaviours like binge eating and hoarding. That frequently involves developing self compassion and healing childhood wounds like abandonment, or neglect. I have also supported clients dealing with depression, anxiety and life transitions.

“What happens in a typical session?”

Most sessions start by reviewing developments since we last met. We might discuss how changes that you planned to make are going, to understand barriers and challenges, and create strategies to meet them. If I’ve asked you to try out new ways of thinking, being, or doing, I will check how that has gone for you. Of course, if there is a crisis that will be our focus. It is your time to use as most benefits you!

“What will it cost?”

Counsellors are not eligible for Medicare rebates, which is reflected in pricing. You do not need a referral or a mental health plan to make a booking. Generally, sessions are weekly or fortnightly to maintain momentum, perhaps tapering to monthly as we near the end. Some clients need just a few sessions to resolve  less complex concerns, while others benefit from longer term support. Your initial 30 minute phone consultation is free. Standard 55 minute sessions are $100. Extended 75 minute sessions are $150. Session are paid on the day, not in advance. Fees are inclusive of GST.

“How should I prepare for my first session?”

Therapy is always guided by your goals. The first session will explore your aims for therapy in depth. Reflecting on what you wish to work on most is a very helpful starting point. I will ask you about what brings you to therapy in our first phone call.

“What happens if I have to cancel a session?”

You can cancel any time up to 24 hours before a session. After that, you will incur a 50% charge for the missed session. The same policy applies to ‘no shows’ without prior notice. It is best to reschedule the morning prior if you suspect you may be unable to make it.
